Portfolio > Straw Bale House

Many people have asked me to put my straw bale house on the website. Theodore Stacy and I built the house from 1999 to 2001 in northwestern Indiana. It is the only straw bale house in the Chicagoland area. Made from reclaimed 19th and early 20th century hand hewn barn timbers, clay reclaimed from the foundation excavation of the building site, and reclaimed windows and doors. Our aim was to create a barn/industrial hybrid home that is energy efficient, cost effective, site appropriate and using as many recycled materials as possible. Our architect was Carl Darr from Chicago.
